Course Fee:
$1,395 includes the required textbook, course handouts and all laboratory infection control materials and anesthesia supplies.

Requirements

Students are required to bring a lab coat and approved safety glasses. 

Attendance in all lectures, seminars and clinical sessions is required. Completion of assigned readings is expected prior to each class. Full knowledge of landmarks, injection sites and standard injection techniques is required before participant will be allowed to administer local anesthesia.

Required Textbook:  Malamed, Stanley F., Handbook of Local Anesthesia. 5th Edition. Mosby Inc. 2004 (will be distributed at the first class meeting)

Participants are expected to arrive on time to ALL classes and clinical sessions, appropriately disinfect, set up and break down operatory, follow CDC required infection control guidelines, properly evaluate clinical partner's medical history and accurately record progress notes of clinical partner.  NOTE: Cellular phone and pagers must be TURNED OFF during all didactic and clinical sessions.

Participation in the local anesthesia course includes not only the experience of administering anesthesia but also the experience of receiving anesthesia. If you are unable to provide or receive anesthetic injections for physical or physiological reason (i.e. pregnancy, allergies, renal dysfunction) the appropriateness of your participation in this course needs to be reviewed. Since students will be receiving injections during the course, if antibiotic pre-medication for dental hygiene or dental procedures is required, we recommend a consultation with your physician. A Massachusetts licensed dentist and dental hygiene faculty certified in the administration of local anesthetics will assist in teaching the laboratory component of the course.


Course Faculty

Sharon L. Hilton, BSDH, MEd, Professor, STCC Department of Dental Hygiene  - shilton@stcc.edu
Mrs. Hilton received her BSDH from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, and her MEd from Westfield State College and her Certificate in Local Anesthesia Administration from the University of Vermont. Mrs. Hilton has 28 years experience as a dental hygiene educator and seven years experience in teaching and administering local anesthesia.

Stephanie Zarse, BSDH, MSDH, Assistant Professor, STCC Department of Dental Hygiene - szarse@stcc.edu
Mrs. Zarse received her BSDH and local anesthesia certificate from University California at San Francisco and her MSDH from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, Missouri. Mrs. Zarse has nine years experience as a dental hygiene educator and nine years in teaching and administering of local anesthesia.


Course Description

This course will provide a comprehensive program of study in the administration of local anesthesia. The course will be a challenging intense program designed to prepare the dental hygienist for the expanded role of local anesthesia administration for pain management in the dental environment. Educational guidelines established by the Massachusetts Rules and Regulations CMR 234 Section 3.1-3.4 will be strictly adhered to. Competency in didactic areas as well as clinical proficiency in the administration of local anesthetic injections will be required prior to certification. Upon certification and application to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry, the registered dental hygienist will be able to take the required Northeast Regional Board Local Anesthesia Examination. This course also meets requirements of the State of Connecticut.  Applicants will be required to provide proof of the following PRIOR to acceptance into the course:

  • Current Dental Hygiene license.

  • Current CPR with AED certification.

  • Current personally owned professional liability insurance

  • Head and Neck Anatomy

  • Anatomical consideration in the administration of local anesthesia

  • Neurophysiology

  • Pharmacology of local anesthetics

  • Pharmacology of local vasoconstrictors

  • Dosage Calculations

  • Clinical action of specific agents

  • Armamentarium

  • Physical and psychological evaluation

  • Basic Injection Techniques

  • Techniques for maxillary anesthesia: posterior superior alveolar, middle superior alveolar and anterior superior alveolar nerve block and infiltration, greater palatine and nasopalatine nerve block

  • Techniques for mandibular anesthesia: inferior alveolar nerve block, lingual nerve block, buccal nerve block and mental nerve block

  • Systemic complications

  • Legal Considerations

Educational Competencies

A comprehensive examination will be given at the end of the course. Achievement of at least a 75% proficiency on the written examination and the 75% proficiency of nine different injection techniques on a laboratory partner is required to successfully complete this course of study. Upon successful completion of both the didactic and laboratory parts of the course, the student will receive a certificate in the administration of local anesthesia and be will eligible to take the NERB Local Anesthesia Examination.

Since we do not expect to offer this course again in the near future, immediate registration is strongly recommended.
