a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial
Pathology and a nationally-known expert and presenter in the area of
early diagnosis of oral pre-cancer and cancer.
The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be over 34,000
cases of oropharyngeal cancer in the USA in 2008. Well over 7,500
people will die of the disease and a significant number of these
cases are within the oral cavity. Experience indicates that there
are certain prevailing myths about what oral cancer ought to look
like. This presentation will illustrate a spectrum of tissue changes
that should arouse a high index of suspicion for oral pre-cancer and
cancer with emphasis on clarifying confusion and misinformation
about the significance of such tissue changes. Relevant discussion
of currently available diagnostic adjuncts( Oral CDx, Vizilite,
VelScope and Toluidine Blue) will address the appropriateness of
these aids.
