EKG Technician Certificate Program

This 30-hour program will cover the following major topics:

  • Principles of the Cardiovascular System: Anatomy and Physiology, Conduction Pathway of the Heart, Electrophysiology of the Heart
  • The Normal Electrocardiogram: Recording Methods, EKG Paper, Heart Rate Calculation, Normal and Abnormal Rhythms
  • Lead Systems & Lead Coding: Limb Leads, Chest Leads, Lead Placement
  • Identifying Rhythms: EKG Characteristics & Clinical Significance, Sinus Rhythm, Atrial Arrhythmias, Ventricular Arrhythmias
  • Acquiring the EKG Tracing: Equipment Operation , Maintenance of Equipment, Special Circumstances & Practical Applications, Procedure: EKG Performance
  • Quality Assurance: Why Important, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Recommendations, American College of Cardiology (ACC) Guidelines, Infection Control

Students will be required to practice setting up and performing EKGs on each other. Privacy and dignity will be maintained at all times. Students will be required to disrobe from the waist up, put on an examination gown and be draped appropriately. The EKG will be performed behind a screened area on an examination table similar to a clinic or physician's office.

Students will be required to sign a waiver stating that the purpose of obtaining the EKGs is for practice and for the instructor to grade. All tracings will be destroyed to assure confidentiality and to be in compliance with the Federal law HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).

Individuals who successfully complete this program will be prepared to take the Certified EKG/ECG Technician (CET) exam from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) and/or the American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals (ACA).

This course is designed for individuals who have prior training/experience in the healthcare field, e.g. CNAs, Phlebotomists, etc. and provides additional training to improve the student’s skill set and employability.
