Program Description

Medical Transcriptionists work in hospitals, physician offices, for medical service agencies, and at home on a free-lance basis. Job placement success will depend on formal training as well as previous experience in the medical field. This series of four (4) on-line courses is designed for individuals interested in developing entry-level skills in Medical Transcription.

Courses begin every 4-8 weeks and participants must have access to a computer with a CD-ROM drive and an email account. Course access ranges from 8-11 weeks depending on the course. Individuals who successfully complete this program and have one year of medical transcription work experience would be prepared to take the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists (AAMT) certification exam.

This on-line program is designed to prepare individuals for careers in medical transcription and for the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists (AAMT) certification exam.  All courses are online and begin approximately every 4-8 weeks. 

Completion of the following On-line courses is required:

  • Keyboarding
    (or acceptable documentation of typing speed of 40wpm with 95% accuracy)

Using the computer software program FasType for Windows, you will learn the basic skills of touch-typing. If you already know how to type, this course will help you improve your typing speed and accuracy. When you are finished with the course, continue to use FasType for Windows to improve your keyboarding skills with its intermediate and advanced lessons. Human Anatomy and Physiology focuses on the structure and function of the human body. In this course, you'll gain an understanding of basic chemistry, the human cell, and the anatomy of the body's organ systems and the jobs that they do. You'll also learn how our organ systems work together to allow us to process sensations, think, communicate, grow, move, reproduce, and stay alive. This course serves as a foundation for all other medical training courses. Over 1,000 words and terms are defined in 33 chapters outlined by body systems. The CD-ROM that must be purchased at www.dlearn.com at an approximate cost of $60 contains a comprehensive audio medical dictionary and words are pronounced through your computer speaker. In this 8-week course (20 hours), you will transcribe 39 doctor-dictated medical reports using your own audio cassette player with headphones and your word processor. The course includes a 20-chapter, 136-page transcription manual (in Word format) that you will download for printing, a 50-question practice exam for certification by the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists (AAMT).  Participants must also purchase two audiotapes of medical transcriptions from www.dlearn.com at an approximate cost of $60.   Participants will also need an audiotape player with headphones and a computer with word processing software in order to participate in this course.
