Medical Coding Certificate Program


The Center for Business and Technology at STCC has partnered with the Professional Skills Center at Bryant & Stratton College to provide an instructor-led Medical Coding Certificate Program utilizing a curriculum approved by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). ZALL-025 Introduction to Medical Coding (CE221/66 hours)

This course is an excellent foundation for people interested in medical coding. It gives participants the opportunity to apply medical terminology and anatomy, to the practice of medical coding. They will gain an understanding of coding principles, documentation requirements, and sequencing. Topics include ICD-9-CM Vol 1-3, CPT-4, and HCPCS code sets. Specific focus is on each manual format and layout. This helps the participants learn coding principles, establishment of medical necessity, relationship of diagnosis to procedure, and documentation requirements. The participants are also introduced to E/M coding. Students are required to have all 3 coding manuals (CPT, ICD-9-CM Vol 1, 2, & 3, and HCPCS) and the textbook Step By Step Medical Coding 2008, by Carol S. Buck. Books can be purchased online at www.pscbooks.bryantstratton.edu , or can be purchased independently. Cost varies depending on what manuals need to be purchased. The cost range for the textbooks is $99 - $400.

ZALL-026 AAPC Professional Medical Coding Curriculum (CE239/80 hours)

This comprehensive curriculum is the official instructional program of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and culminates in the national certification examination for Certified Professional Coder (CPC). All aspects of CPT, ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS coding are covered, as well as coding practices, ethics, and standards. The course fee includes membership to national and local organization (AAPC), Full-Day Review the day before the national exam, and the AAPC National Coding Exam. Course textbooks are also included in the curriculum, however the coding manuals are the participant responsibility (CPT, ICD-9-CM Vol 1 & 2, HCPCS), which can be purchased online at www.pscbooks.bryantstratton.edu , or purchased independently. Cost varies depending on what books need to be purchased.

ZALL-027 Certified Coding Specialist Prep Class (CE279/90 hours)

Prepare for the AHIMA credential of a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Trainees will demonstrate an understanding of facility based diagnosis and procedural coding and coding guidelines related to sequencing of diagnosis and procedures, obtain skills required to complete a comprehensive review of a medical record according to the UHDDS and Coding Clinic and the DRG system. Specific emphasis is placed on the details of inpatient coding i.e. Present on Admit Indicators and the Co-morbidity and complication codes. Required books: ICD-9-CM-Vol 1, 2, &3, CPT, and Faye Brown’s ICD-9 Coding Handbook 2008, from the AHA Press. These books can be purchased online at www.pscbooks.bryantstratton.edu or purchased independently.
