Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training

The Center for Business & Technology, in conjunction with Human Services Training Consultants, Inc., conducts the state-approved 127-hour EMT program during both day and evening hours in the Fall, Spring and Summer terms.

Attendance at one, full-day  Saturday class meeting is also required.

Program Fee:  $760 payable in full at the time of registration. Students will also be required to purchase textbooks.


Program Description

The Emergency Medical Training Program consists of approximately 127 hours of lectures, a field trip, and workshops designed to prepare the student to challenge the Massachusetts State Certification Examination. The program is based on the Department of Transportation curriculum for Basic Emergency Medical Technician and is approved by the Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services. The EMT program gives the student an excellent foundation in Basic Life Support skills and techniques; patient assessment; and safe, sane transportation.

Instruction includes:
  • 124 hours of lectures and workshops
  • 3 hours of field exercises - auto extrication.

Program Outline

  • Introduction to Emergency Care Training and Legal Aspects
  • Airway Obstruction, Respiratory Arrest, and Cardiac Arrest
  • Mechanical Aids to Breathing and Resuscitation
  • Bleeding, Shock, Traumatic Injuries, and Wound Care
  • Fractures of the Upper and Lower Extremities and Neck and Back Injuries
  • Medical Emergencies and Assisted Medications, Behavioral and Environmental Emergencies
  • Obstetrics and Gynecological, Pediatric and Elderly Emergencies
  • Patient Handling, Extrication, Communications, and Terrorism
EMT Skills Include:
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automatic External Defibrillation
  • Patient Assessment and Wound Care
  • Splinting and Neck/Back Immobilization
  • Oxygen Therapy and Resuscitation Techniques
  • Patient Handling and General Knowledge of the Ambulance
