Introduction to Local Area Networks:
From Ethernet to Wireless to TCP/IP

Course Description

Workshop participants will explore networking fundamentals, which will help them successfully and safely utilize their office networks and interact with network vendors.  The workshop will cover the basics of Ethernet and Wireless network equipment, and connecting to the outside world via the Internet.  Students will configure wireless Interfaces to access the campus's network.  The workshop will also include a brief overview of how TCP/IP works which will allow a better understanding of firewalls.

Major topics will include:

  • Network hardware (hubs, routers, bridges and switches)
  • Overview of TCP/IP protocol suite

  • Utilizing wireless networking with a hands-on demonstration

  • Working with Wireless SSIDs and encryption
  • Connecting to the Internet via an ISP WAN link such as DSL or T1

  • Networks and VLAN intranet functions.

  • How firewalls filter and protect your networks

This introductory seminar will use a combination of lectures and tours to examine the physical and logical layout, as well as the benefits of computer networks. 

Participants will get a behind the scenes tour of the STCC Campus network
