How to Hold a
Flute.
Always
use a long mirror to practice your warm ups then you will be able to see
how “correct” or “wrong” you look.
Firstly, hold your flute, and then drop your arms- still holding
your flute! - Then lift. Your arms and fingers will now be in the best
position for you. Bring the flute to your lips (your flute must come to
you and not you to the flute). Do not pull your right arm back too far-
push forward so that your shoulders are above your hips.
There must be as little movement as possible. All fingers are
usually curved over the keys and your right hand at right angles to the
flute. Check that your left hand little finger is near the G# key. The
left hand is slightly away from your body- let the air circulate!! The
pressure points for holding your flute are:
Left-hand forefinger at base
Your lip
Right-hand thumb
